  3. About iMac Update 1.1

Based on customer and developer feedback, Apple has made improvements to its USB software for iMac customers. The iMac Update 1.1 includes these new improvements and those previously released in iMac Update 1.0. This update improves the iMac’s ability to identify USB devices when starting up, improves the startup time when many USB devices are connected, and enables new USB solutions. You don’t have to install iMac Update 1.0 before you install iMac Update 1.1.

  7. Who needs the iMac Update? 
  8. Apple recommends that every iMac customer install this update. Only iMac customers that use additional USB devices, other than the Apple USB keyboard and Apple USB mouse included with their iMac, are likely to notice the USB improvements after installation. The iMac Update 1.1 will replace the Mac OS ROM file in the System Folder with an updated version.

  10. Note: This update should only be installed on iMacs.

  12. Before you install
  13. • Your iMac must have Mac OS 8.5 or later already installed. 
  14. • The iMac Firmware Update must be installed. 
  15. If you haven’t installed the iMac Firmware Update, the iMac Update 1.1 will not install.
  16. To install the iMac Firmware Update, go to Apple’s Support web site (http://www.apple.com/support/imac), download the iMac Firmware Update, and follow the onscreen instructions.
  17. • If you are using software that runs in the background, such as virus-protection or security software, turn it off before you install iMac Update 1.1.

  19. IMPORTANT Installing this upgrade will not affect files stored on your hard disk. However, it is highly recommended that you back up the data on your iMac before installing this update. Apple is not responsible for any lost data.

  21. Installing the update

  23. 1. Follow the instructions on Apple’s Support web site (http://www.apple.com/support/imac) and download the iMac Update 1.1.

  25. 2. Double-click the iMac Update 1.1 file to open it.  
  26. An iMac Update 1.1 icon appears on the Desktop.

  28. Note: If there was a problem downloading the file, an error message appears. Try downloading the file again.

  30. 3. Double-click the iMac Update icon to open the folder.

  32. 4. Double-click the Installer icon and follow the onscreen instructions.

  34. 5. When a message appears saying installation was successful, click OK.
  35. Your iMac will restart.

If you perform a clean installation of Mac OS on your iMac after you’ve installed iMac Update 1.1, the update may be removed and you may need to reinstall it. To see if you need to reinstall the iMac Update 1.1, open the Apple () menu and choose About This Computer. A window appears. If you don’t see Mac OS ROM 1.2.1 or later listed in the upper-right area, then you need to reinstall the iMac Update 1.1. Follow the instructions in “Installing the Update” above.
